Yamaha Awards GRANT of $13,000 to Nebraska Off Highway Vehicle Association

Donation Supports trail maintenance and administration as part of ongoing effort
to encourage safe, responsible riding and sustainable riding areas in Nebraska.

Thank you Yamaha for your generous contributions to NOHVA for 2008, 2009 and 2011!  Shown from left to right are NOHVA officers, Gary Gibbs, Dan Nitzel, Dennis Walz and Tami Walz.

Grand Island, Nebraska May 31, 2011  – The Nebraska Off Highway Vehicle Association (NOHVA) is pleased to announce it has received a Yamaha OHV Access Initiative GRANT of $13,000.  For 2011, NOHVA plans to spend $20,693.80 for improvements at the Headworks OHV Park of which $13,000 is provided by Yamaha and $7693.80 will be funded with voluntary NOHVA membership fee's and Jamboree income.

Under a Headworks OHV Park trail improvement plan proposed by NOHVA President and Co-Founder Dan Nitzel, a proposal has been made to stabilize much of the entrance trail with 8,000 cement blocks and improved drainage costing an estimated $15,878.80.   The improvements would be completed with volunteer help from NOHVA members.  Problem areas where mud had been a problem will be targeted first.  To further improve the entrance trail, Loup Power has offered to donate additional stabilization materials to further weather proof the entrance trail.  If any funds are left over after the trail improvements, work will begin to improve conditions in the parking and unloading area.

Another $4,815.00 of NOHVA funds will be used this year to purchase and remodel a used construction trailer and construct a foundation to park the trailer.  The trailer will be used as a Jamboree sign in office and an ATV safety training and emergency responder training classroom.

This is the third grant that NOHVA has received from Yamaha since 2008.  All of the funds from the 2011 grant will be used for trail improvements.  In 2008 and 2009 the Yamaha grants helped fund general liability insurance protection to land owners and NOHVA volunteers at five riding area locations in Nebraska.

According to Dan Nitzel, Business Manager of NOHVA, “Liability is always a top concern among land owners that host ATV, dirtbike and UTV trails on their land.  The insurance purchased in 2008, 2009 and 2010 with funding from the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative grant allowed us to help protect the land owners who open their land for public motorized recreation.  Also, the insurance protected our volunteers from potential lawsuits and injuries.  While in previous years the Yamaha grants provided funding for insurance, after a successful Jamboree in the fall of 2010, NOHVA made enough money to pay for insurance in 2011.  We can now use the Yamaha grant combined with funds that we receive from voluntary memberships and donations to fully fund trail related expenses that we have been planning for a long time.  Our other expenses at the riding area include maintaining restrooms, trash contrainers and trash pickup, rider education, and most importantly, trail maintenance.”

“After weather dramatically reduced attendance at our Jamborees in 2009 and 2010, without the support from Yamaha, the future of NOHVA was in doubt”, said Dan Nitzel.  “Yamaha has bailed us out of financial trouble two times before so we can continue to support and fund public ATV, dirtbike and UTV trail projects in Nebraska.  Unlike many states, the State of Nebraska has no registration program to fund recreational ATV, dirtbike and UTV trails and trail organizations.  Instead, trail funding and maintenance is left up to volunteer organizations like NOHVA.  Anyone who rides at the Headworks Park near Genoa should appreciate the role that Yamaha has played in keep the riding area open."
