Gate Destroyed At Headworks

On May 5th, a NOHVA member from Papillon was caught pulling down a gate on the restricted north side of the canal. Apparently, the two people involved were riding on the north side at night when an crew shift change took place at midnight.

The two riders had snuck into the restricted area while the gate was open during the shift change. The shift that was relieved and on their way home un-knowingly locked the gate on their way out. When the rider wanted out, instead of waiting for the barge crew to open the gate for them, they tore down the gate with a pickup truck.

A Loup power employee approached the two people involved and asked them what they were doing. They got abusive with the Loup employee and the employee obtained a licence plate number. There was about $500 worth of damage to the gate. The driver of the vehicle was charged with malicious destruction of property, a felony. The charge was later dropped after the person(s) involved offered to pay for the damage to the gate.

It is the hope of this writer that the people involved not only pay for the damage they did but also apologize to the Loup employee involved. Considering all the problems that the great people who work at Headworks have to put up with, it is unfortunate that they had to deal with this incident as well and they deserve an apology from those who were involved! (Hint, hint)
