Want to Ride in Iowa?
Iowa has changed their laws
regarding out of state ATV and dirtbike registration. Out of state riders NO
LONGER need an Iowa title to get a Iowa trail permit. According to John
Sciortino, Pottawattamie County recorder, all that is required to obtain a
permit is your drivers license and your VIN number. A title is no longer
required to register your machine in Iowa.
The problem stems from an Iowa law that requires an ATV to be registered in any state. Although Nebraska requires its residents to title their ATVs, there is no registration requirement. About 1,500 Nebraskans have been forced to register their ATVs in Iowa.
“A lot of people from Nebraska want to ride at the River Valley OHV Park just off the South Omaha Bridge Road," Sciortino said. "But in order to do that, they had to surrender their Nebraska title, get an Iowa title and have the ATV registered here."
Instead of going through the registration process again, ATV owners may simply go to anyone who sells Iowa hunting and fishing licenses and purchase a nonresident ATV sticker for $16. The stickers currently are being sold only at Woods Sporting Goods, Wal-Mart and Lake Manawa State Park. Other vendors will sell them as soon as their electronic sales capabilities are upgraded, probably by September 1st, 2004.
All nonresident Iowa registrations will expire at the end of the year.
According to Chris Didamo, River Valley Trail Riders and a member of the NOHVA Board of Dorectors, Iowa does recognize a Colorado registration, and registrations from most other states as long as they are not expired.
It still appears that Nebraska residents will still be able to title their machines in Iowa. For more information, see the article below.
