Headworks Update

by Dan Nitzel

As I write this article, the Headworks area is closed for dredging operations.  The riders who continue to support us as members will hopefully be getting a re-opening notice soon.

Please note that the new bridge south of Genoa on state highway 39 and 22 is now open!  Even though construction is still going on in Genoa, traffic through town is open to through traffic also.

When the Headworks OHV park reopens, a few new rules will be in effect.  Children under the age of 16 who are riding an ATV or Dirtbike must be accompanied by a parent, or legal guardian at all times.  In camping and parking areas, camp fires are limited to no more than 3 feet in diameter and the cold remains of the fire must be cleaned up and disposed of in dumpsters.

The new rule for those under 16 are in response to a national outcry by various groups (see related article in this newspaper) demanding something needs to be done about deaths and injuries involving children on ATVs.  Additionally, there have been complaints that parents are allowing their kids to “ride”  wild in the parking area.  The camp fire limit is in response to complaints about huge camp fires in the parking area.  With these rules in place, law enforcement can now act on complaints.

Help is still needed after the are is reopened to keep trash under control in the parking area.  Please help us keep the trash picked up.

Once again we need to tell riders that they need to stay off the roads at Headworks.  From my observations, if you watch the ATV riders who get on the roads at Headworks, these people are generally rural residents.  Where they live, riding an ATV on a road is totally acceptable and they do it all the time.  So they think it’s OK to ride on the roads at Headworks as well.  Riding on the roads at Headworks is not acceptable or legal for ANY reason unless you are with law enforcement.  If you see someone riding on the roads, take note of the truck they are parked by and report the description of their vehicles including a license plate number to a law enforcement officer or call 911.  Do not call 911 unless you have a description of who is riding on the road.  Your name will be kept confidential.

As for the jamboree, we are adding another activity to the event.  Don Novotny, owner of Polaris of Norfolk is bring his ATV sled to the jamboree so we can have ATV pulls.   This will make four activities scheduled for Saturday afternoon.  The drags races and raffle will occur as usual on Sunday.

We are still looking for volunteers for the jamboree.  Can you help?  If so, please consider volunteering.
