Dear NOHVA Members,
I am in the process of scheduling a meeting to
plan for a "possible" Fall Jamboree. Our tentative dates for this
event is October 8th and 9th or maybe October 29th or 30th, 2005.
The reason I say this is a "possible" jamboree
is because there a few details that need to be worked out for the
event first. The first of those details involve volunteers. We
barely had enough to get by with the spring event. Historically,
fewer people volunteer for the fall jamboree. In order to keep from
burning out the people who volunteer for EACH and EVERY event and to
help get people signed in reasonably fast, we need more volunteers.
If we do not have adequate volunteers, we
cannot hold the event.
I have set a cut off date of September 1st,
2005 as the final date of decision for the fall jamboree. If we
cannot get enough volunteers to run the tent and work the events by
this date, we will not hold the fall jamboree. To see a list of
positions open for the jamboree, visit
http://www.nohva.com/jambovol.htm to volunteer,
contact us.
In addition to needing volunteer help, we need
input as to the operation of the drag races on Sunday. There were
some problems at the spring event with class organization, which was
my fault, and we also had problems with demanding individuals
harassing the volunteers running the drags. Please keep in mind
that we had a shortage of volunteers last spring to run the drags.
I had the classes confused from what was published in the newsletter
and from what was on the board at the drags. I had no idea that
there was a mix-up at the time and the unfortunate unknowing
volunteers at the drags caught hell over it.
It takes about three to six months of planning
to pull the jamborees off, and if people are unhappy with how they
are run, then we could certainly use some help. If you are one of
the unhappy ones, are you willing to help plan and run the event?
Hence, I am putting together a drag race
planning meeting. This meeting will be held sometime the end of
July or early in August. We need to determine a location for the
meeting that works for people who want to attend. There will be
only one meeting for now. Tentative sites include but are not
limited to York, Grand Island, Lincoln, Genoa or Columbus on or
about August 2nd. Please forward me a suggestion for a location and
date at that would work best for you if you would like to attend.
Before I close, I would like to comment on the
amount of time and effort the people have worked the Jamborees in
the past. The people who worked at the last jamboree volunteered at
lot of time and their own money to make it happen. You see them in
the sign up tent, checking arm bands, putting us signs, watering the
trails, running the events and picking ups trash. I'd like to name
them all, but there are so many involved I would leave someone out!
If we have another jamboree, please THANK them.
Running the jamborees, along with writing the
newsletters, managing trails, trying to raise money to keep things
running, communicating with riders, land managers and law
enforcement involved with the three areas we are involved with,
managing funds, managing the web sites, keeping our insurance
up-to-date and trying to not get sued, working on a new Forest
Service travel plan, working on new places to ride and arguing with
non-members about why they should support NOHVA, is truly a VERY
thankless job. I do not know how much more I can handle this job
and we need more people involved!
At the jamborees, every year we hear more
complaints from the non-members about NOHVA (you mean I have to PAY
to race in the drags?). They have no idea what we've done over the
years at Headworks, Halsey and other locations, and most riders seem
care less. Unlike most other states, we get no support for trails
from the state. We get no support from the manufacturers, and only
a handful of FAITHFUL ATV
and dirtbike retailers/dealers in Nebraska support us. For
the care free riders who use the areas we are involved with, if our
involvement diminishes or if our organization folds, these areas
will eventually close unless in the most unlikely event that someone
comes along and volunteers to help out.
Our jamborees are some of the largest in the
nation, and undoubtedly the most civil and family oriented. Along
with voluntary memberships, the jamborees help pay the expenses
involved with keeping the existing Nebraska public areas we now ride
open.
We need volunteers to fill the jobs that
need to be done. Can you handle it?
Thanks!
