NOHVA Donates to Harlan Co. Project

By Dan Nitzel

The Nebraska Off Highway Vehicle has donated $2000 for a proposed off highway vehicle park.   If all goes as planned, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Republican City Nebraska will host our state’s biggest and most developed ATV and dirtbike park.  The park, located on the south-east corner of the dam at Republican City will contain just under 500 acres of land.  Inside the park a number of trails are planned along with a moto-cross track, drag strip, kids riding park, picnic shelter, RV camping and several scenic overlooks of Harlan County Reservoir.

The park at Harlan will be about twice the size of existing OHV areas in Kansas at Milford Lake and Tuttle Creek.  NOHVA has been involved in the project with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for several years.   Projected project cost is expected to exceed $300,000.  An application for a $78,800 grant for the project has been submitted to Recreational Trails Program (RTP) Committee.  Other funding for the project will come from the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers, local economic development funds, NOHVA and other sources.

The Recreational Trails Plan (RTP) fund represents a refund of the Federal gasoline tax that Nebraska’s off road users pay.   Federal gasoline taxes collected from ATV, dirtbike, snowmobile and other off highway vehicles are refunded back to Nebraska from the Federal Highway Administration via the Recreational Trails Program (RTP).
