NOHVA Offers Help at Harlan County Reservoir

REPUBLICAN CITY, NEBRASKA -- NOHVA has offered to help in developing a management plan for existing and new trails at the Harlan County Reservoir.

          Last September, I traveled to Republican City to meet with Jim Brown with the Army Corp of Engineers. 

          Since there has been a drought over the last couple of years, the level of the lake has dramatically fallen.  This summer, the water level of the lake was far below normal and thousands of acres of dry lake bed was exposed.  With the dry lake bed exposed, the Army Corp of Engineers allowed ATV, dirtbike and jeep enthusiasts to ride on the dry lake bed.

          While there were a few issues, the dry lake bed attracted thousands of off-road vehicle enthusiasts.  Now that the drought is beginning to subside, and the level of the lake is increasing, the Corp of Engineers would like to develop a plan to continue to have a place for ATV and dirtbike enthusiasts to ride. 

          While there is an OHV area set aside for people to use on the southeast corner of the dam, the area is largely undeveloped and does not attract much interest from riders. 

          After talking to Mr. Brown, the sheriff’s department and a local Mariana business man, NOHVA has offered their services to help in developing a plan to manage off-road vehicle use. 

          We are now in the process of determining a place for all interested parties to meet and discuss the issues.  NOHVA would like to sponsor a series of meetings to be held in Alma or Republican City. 

          In addition to planning the meetings, NOHVA is looking for some local involvement from ATV and dirtbike riders, and from local businesses.  There is a huge amount of potential for trails at this location.  We need riders and businesses to become involved in the process!    If you would like to become involved in this project, please contact me at 308-381-2143 or email me .
