Public Comments on Draft Nebraska State Comprehensive
Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) Sought
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, along with approximately 20 state, local
and federal leaders in outdoor recreation, is seeking comments from the public
on a draft of the State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) being
developed to identify the major issues in outdoor recreation and the
implementation strategies on how to address these issues.
A SCORP must be in place for a state to qualify for Land and Water Conservation
Funds (LWCF) that are distributed across the state for outdoor recreational
projects. LWCF falls under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service of the
U.S. Department of the Interior. This plan will be submitted to the National
Park Service after the public comment period is complete, the Nebraska Game and
Parks Board of Commissioners approve the plan and the Governor approves the
plan. The public comment period will extend through February 25, 2006 and the
plan will go through the approval process at the Nebraska Game and Parks
Commission's March meeting.
The four-year project has incorporated extensive input from the public and the
state's outdoor recreational providers. Approximately 1.3 million comments were
recorded on outdoor recreation during the process. The draft plan identifies
the current supply of outdoor recreation in the state, the major issues
regarding outdoor recreation and the strategies to solve these issues.
The plan may be reviewed on the Commission's web site at
www.ngpc.state.ne.us/parks/programs/scorp/ and hard copies are available for
review at all Commission and Natural Resource District offices. Comments may be
submitted to Michelle Stryker by phone, (402) 471-5425 or email,
michelle.stryker@ngpc.ne.gov
