Ride 'n Work Weekend is Planned At Halsey

PLEASE!!!  WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

The annual Ride 'n Work weekend is planned for the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey on Friday April 21st and  Saturday April 22nd,  2006 .  Work days will begin each day at 10 AM.  If you are interested in helping, meet us at the main camp ground parking area on Friday and/or Saturday at 10 AM.  NOHVA members and non-NOHVA members are invited to help.  The main camp ground parking area is located off state spur 86B and about 1/2 mile south of state highway 2.  See the map below for more information.   Dan Nitzel is coordinating the work weekend and will be camping at camp spot 27 beginning April 20th.  If he is not in the main parking area,  look for his Colorado 5th wheel camper or dark grey Dodge pickup with the “banshee” license plate.

NOHVA plans to be involved in the repair of damaged areas caused by ATV and dirtbike riders and to do some maintenance to the existing Dismal River Trail.   Details of ATV and dirtbike related work include blocking off of un-authorized hill climbs and trails with trees and fencing, re-seeding the disturbed area and raking over the seed.  The cattle gates need to be dug out for the season and approaches to the gates need to be improved.  What little trash there is along the trails needs to be picked up.  NOHVA will supply the materials for ATV and dirtbike trail work.  Please bring the following items IF you have them: flat end shovels, hard tooth rakes, maybe a chain saw and of course your ATV or dirtbike!  4x4 ATVs with trailers under 50" wide are a BIG PLUS.  Many of the areas are accessible by pickup truck.

In order to reduce costs, There will be no free camping for volunteers in the group camp ground this year.  If you plan to camp there, be sure to reserve your camp spot early!  Visit www.reserveamerica.com/   Motels are available in Halsey at the Stockade Motel and in Thedford at the Rodeway Inn.  There are several restaurants in Thedford that serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with hours from 6 AM to 10 PM, and a bar and grill in Halsey with hours from 11 AM to 7 PM.

Any one who is interested in preserving trails at the Nebraska National Forest is encouraged to attend and help!  If you would like to help with this, simply show up on either Saturday or Sunday.   NOHVA Business Office: Contact Us via the web or call 308-381-2143 (leave a message).  U.S. Forest Service office in Halsey phone number is 308-533-2257.

Note the above changes to the River Loop.  About nine campsites have been closed and the road along the Loup River is closed.  Access to the RV dump station is difficult as larger rigs may not be able to turn around.  A new office building is being constructed where the old tennis courts were.  The new building should be completed this summer.
