Little Blue OHV Park Plan Submitted

By Dan Nitzel

After a long year of trying to find a suitable location for a new ATV and dirtbike park, a revised grant proposal for a new off highway vehicle park near Deshler and Hebron Nebraska has been submitted to the Nebraska Recreational Trails Program Committee.  An announcement will be made in January of 2008 if the grant application is approved by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The proposed Little Blue OHV Park project in south-central Nebraska is planned to be about 160 acres.   It is estimated that the project will initially cost about $350,000.  The park will be developed over several phases.

The Little Blue OHV Club has been busy raising thousands of dollars in funding for the park over the last two years.  The Nebraska Off Highway Vehicle Association has offered to donate $2,000.00 to the project if land is purchased.

During the last couple of months changes have been made to the local government steering committee that has been involved with the project.  The original people steering the project resigned and Arlis Hohl, Director of the Thayer County Economic Development Alliance has taken over the reigns of resurrecting the project and re-submitting a grant proposal.  Arlis has also been busy trying to locate land for the project as well and has been extremely busy getting paperwork and alliances re-built.  Without Arlis, the project may have fallen apart.

The Little Blue OHV Park will be one of the most innovative grass roots involvement projects in the Midwest as it will be used to help keep young people and families in the area and will be used to attract visitors locally and across the nation.  It will feature trails and hills for ATVs, dirtbikes, snowmobiles and BMX bikes.

A small maintenance fee maybe charged to use the area and it will be open to the public.  The Little Blue OHV Club, a chapter of NOHVA will help manage the area.  Sponsors of the project include the Cities of Deshler and Hebron, the Little Blue OHV chapter of NOHVA, NOHVA and other local developments corporations.
