Headworks Rumors Quelled

By Dan Nitzel, NOHVA Business Manager

Over the last couple of months I have been contacted several times concerning the future of the Headworks OHV Park near Genoa.  The rumor was that the area where we now ride may be closed so that the company that is mining the sand on the north side can also mine the sand on the south side. To clear up any rumors or miss-conceptions, I wrote a letter to Mr. Neal Suess, President and CEO of the Loup Public Power District asking if any of the rumors were true and what were the future plans for the riding area.

In response to NOHVA, Mr. Suess wrote “The District does not have any plans to close off the south sand pile area to ATV and dirtbike riders. We have not discussed this with anyone and there have been no

newspaper articles we are aware of that have discussed this. To the extent the rumors and newspaper articles have discussed the sandpile operations on the south side, they have done so without contacting anyone from the District regarding specifics of our ongoing activity. Unless someone from management at the District has been directly quoted, these articles and rumors are hearsay at best.”

“The District understands NOHVA's concerns and we will work with NOVHA to keep you informed of ongoing changes at the Headworks Park area. We do not anticipate any changes to occur for the next several years. However, the District is beginning explore the relicensing of our hydroelectric facilities, including the canal and sandpile areas. If federal or state agencies demand the closure of these areas, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which oversees activities associated with the District's

hydroelectric activities, agrees and mandates the closing of this area in the terms of the District's new license, then the District would be forced to close these areas. We do not anticipate this, however, the possibility always exists that this could happen.”

Having received a formal response from Mr. Suess of Loup Power concerning the future of the riding area and barring any major catastrophes, the Headworks OHV Park should remain open as it now for the foreseen future.  NOHVA would like to thank the Loup Public Power District for allowing us the privilege of using the area south of the canal for recreational ATV and dirtbike riding.  Many of us have fond memories of enjoying the trails located in the park, and we hope that the good people with the Loup Public Power District will allow us the privilege to continue our recreational riding there for many years to come.
