Is Dan Staying or Not?

By Dan Nitzel, NOHVA Business Manager

It’s been almost 22 years since Gary Gibbs and I co-founded this organization as the TBQ Sport Club, now known as the Nebraska Off Highway Vehicle Association.  We’ve grown from about 35 members to almost 3500 members.  We’ve grown from one to seven chapters and assist with six public ATV and dirtbike areas in Nebraska.  Members of our organization serve on various committees.  Our member volunteers are busy all the time.  NOHVA is well respected in circles of local, state and national trail interest groups.

A few months ago I mentioned that I would like to hand the torch of running the organization over to new blood after April of 2009.  As Business Manager for NOHVA, the job currently demands anywhere from 20 to 50 hours a week, and requires more of my time every year.  My regular full time job at the City of Grand Island power plant takes over 40 hours a week.   With the growing amount of time that the Business Manager job now requires, the Business Manager job more than just a part time job, in fact, it’s a lot of work.

After facing confused and unknowing critics for several decades and an increasing amount of work, and after thinking about it for several years,  I thought about resigning.  I’ve had a great time with the organization and with the people I’ve had the pleasure to work with over the years!  All the volunteers who volunteered to help at the last Jamboree was Great help!

As of this writing, after hearing from many, many who want me to stay on as Business Manager, I have decided to leave it up to our members at the Annual Meeting to be held on January 18th.   If you have a problem with my job performance and duties, this will be the time and place to discuss it and vote on it.  If anyone would like to take a shot at the job of NOHVA’s Business Manager, bring your qualifications to the meeting so that everyone can hear them.  If you have a plan to re-organize NOHVA into a better organization, please bring your ideas and suggestions to the Annual Meeting.    If there are items that you think need to be addressed by our organization, this is the time to bring it up.

The Business Manager job currently has many hats and is very involved in our state’s ATV and dirtbike politics and policies.  It is my hope that those who are critical of my leadership and the current direction of our organization show leadership themselves and responsibly take over some of the duties of our organization to ensure that the areas we now enjoy remain open for us and our families in the future.
